Design Team ~ Jamie Rodgers Crafts Christmas Wishes Collection ~ Christmas Past By Ian Rump-Smith | Craftmania Blog

My favourite day of the week ....

Hello lovely crafters, I'm back and couldn't help myself in sharing some more Christmas ideas with you as with only 111 days to go until the big day :-) lol

Any excuse to bring back some more MDF Tag creations right?!!

So much fun and a little addictive, but trust me you really have to try them out.

Intro over - let's get cracking.....

I'm loving the grunge style projects at the moment, and this works perfectly with todays' Christmas card.

Step 1

Using a sheet of A4 Kraft Paper and my Stitched Square Nesting Die Set I cut out the largest square to fit onto my 8x8" card base.

Creating My Background.....

▪️Take your glass mat or blending mat along with Distress Oxide Ink Pads in Brushed Corduroy, Vintage Photo and Walnut Stain

▪️Now I wanted to create a vintage looking background

Using Blending Brushes, I began to blend my colours; I started with the light colour first and then went all over. I then added the darker colour to the corners and edges.

Step 2

Next I stencilled my background using Jamie Rodgers Crafts - Snowflakes Stencil.

TOP TIP - I used my Make Art Stay-tion here.

There are a few different brands (I'll pop a couple of examples in my Shopping List).

A great investment for projects like this where you need a secure magnetic surface for stencilling, aligning, embossing or using inks to create backgrounds. Makes life easier and helps you get the best results.

Next, I took my Walnut Stain Distress Oxide Ink and ran it over the stencil.

This is a darker shade of brown, so I knew the colour would stand out perfectly on my background.

Now here comes the fun....I just love the effect of this next part!!

For this I used Cosmic Shimmer Matt Chalk Paint in Warm White.

You will need some extra work space around your glass mat and cover the surrounding surface as this can get a little messy (especially if you get carried away in the moment like me lol)!!

I squeezed a pea sized amount of paint onto my mat and then added a couple of drips of water with a paint brush.

I mixed it together before adding some to my brush, which I then tapped over my background.

I repeated this process until I was happy with the amount of paint splats.....

See Photo 📸 below

I applied double sided tape to adhere my background to the card base.

TIP - This is the best kind of tape to use for backgrounds - once it is stuck is permament :-)

Step 3

Next you need Gold Mirror Card and Jolly Holly Corners Die Set

I cut out four corners and then glued these to my backgrounds' corners.

Here I used Jamie Rodgers Crafts 1 Litre Clear Drying Glue decanted into extra fine nozzle bottle.

I added some tiny red pearls to each corner to give a little colour.....

Next - you will need to cut out the following in Polar White Elite Card (which allows you to add your choice of colour later).

▪️Merry Christmas Circle Die Set

▪️Festive Foliage Die Set (for the fir branch)

To colour my branches, I chose Chameleon Green Quick Dry Pigment Ink Pad, which I dragged over the die cuts.

I sprayed the sentiment circle with Gladiator Red Elite Mister Spray.

⛔️ NOTE - Make sure you have your surface well covered to do this

With the sentiment piece, I used Elite Misters in Heritage Green and Sunbeam Yellow.

I wanted more grunge for these pieces.... so I used Cosmic Shimmer Gold Shimmer Paint with a little water which I then tapped some over the sentiment.

With the branches I used a paint brush to colour the edges. (See Photo Below 📸)

I glued the sentiment circle together and then glued it onto my card front.

Step 4

Time to create my Tag now... I've saved the best till last.....

I used one of the Medium MDF Tags which I coloured using the same Distress Oxide Inks as earlier. However, this time I've done the corners and edges with Walnut Stain.

TIP - I found a blending sponge worked better for this.

You will need a large / DL stamping block or ideally, a Stamp Platform with this stamp set.

▪️Here I've used Black Panther Quick Dry Pigment Ink Pad to ink up my stamp, before printing the image onto my tag.

▪️Now I wanted to add more paint splats using the same method as before.

So this time I used three colours of Cosmic Shimmer Chalk Paint - Citron, Chestnut and Warm White.

This was the result....

▪️I tied a piece of gold ribbon the the top of my tag

Step 5

Taking the above stamp set, I stamped out the flower and three leaves onto Polar White Elite Card.

Now most of you know by now, I love colouring using my alcohol markers, so I've used these here to colour my stamped images.

You can choose how you colour your stamps; whether by pens, pencils or other mediums.

If you need any help with your colouring techniques, be sure to check out my previous blog -

Once coloured, I used a craft knife to cut around my images, leaving a slight white border.

I added these to my tag, gluing them down with silicone glue to add some dimension.

Gently, so as not to knock my stamped image, I used the silicone to add the tag to the front of my card as well. I set this aside to dry for a few hours.

And that folks is my card completed!

So there are a few ideas for your festive card making and also how to incorporate MDF into other projects, as well as stand-alone designs!!

As a Design Team, it gives us a real buzz to see your takes from the blogs we write, so please share with us, ask questions and get in touch via message or on our Facebook Group - Create With Craftmania And Jamie Rodgers.

As always, thank you for reading and following my blogs.....

Have a great crafty week and I look forward to being back with you next Wednesday!

Take care,

Ian x
